Emergent Literacy Design
By Tyler Felmet

Rationale: This lesson is designed to help children identify the phoneme /v/, which is represented by the letter symbol V. Students will learn to recognize /v/ in spoken words using the sound analogy of a vacuum cleaner. They will also learn to recognize V In words. They will practice finding /v/ in words and apply phoneme awareness with /v/ in phonetic cue reading by distinguishing rhyming words from beginning letters.

Materials: Primary paper and pencil, poster with “Vicky vacuumed her van on Valentine’s Day,” crayons, Dr. Seuss’s ABC (Random House, 1963), Letter V song video, Write the letter V video, flashcards with the words VET, VAN, BEST, HERB, VERY, and V phonics worksheet

Procedures:

1. Say: When we say words, our mouths move to make sounds. Letters represent those sounds. Today we’ll be learning how to recognize the way our mouths move to say /v/. /v/ is spelled with the letter V. Let’s start with a video! Play: the “The Letter V Song.”

2. V sounds like a vacuum cleaner. (Make motion like vacuuming) /v/.. /v/.. /v/. Our top teeth touch our bottom lip, and we breathe out. Use your voice and feel the vibrations.

3. Let’s see if we can find /v/ in the word love. Lll-ooo-ve…. llll-ooo-vvv-e - See how my teeth touch my bottom lip? Vacuum cleaner /v/ is in love.

4. Let’s try a fun tongue tickler.

Vicky was a vampire that lived in Transylvania. She wanted to go visit her boyfriend on Valentine’s Day. Her minivan was super dirty, so she had to clean it before she could go. So, here’s our tickler- Vicky the vampire vacuumed her van on Valentine’s Day. Let’s stretch the /v/ sound at the beginning of the words. VVVVVicky the vvvvvampire vvvvvacuumed her vvvvan on VVVVValetine’s Day. Let’s try it again, but we’ll break the sounds off the words instead. /v/ icky the /v/ampire /v/acuumed her /v/an on /V/alentine’s Day.

5. We use the letter V to spell /v/. V looks like vampire tooth. Pass out primary paper and pencils. Let’s watch a video on how to write the letter V. Follow along! Play “Write the letter V.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OrP63EGU98

Practice writing the letter v on your primary paper. We start at the fence, the dotted line in the middle, and draw a slanted line down to the sidewalk, the bottom solid line. Then, draw a second line that is slanted back upwards to the fence.  Write the letter v at least 5 times.

6. Do you hear /v/ in vein or blood? Value or important? Vaccine or shot? Vase or flowers? If you hear the /v/ sound in the next few words, pretend to vacuum the floor. The, very, scary, Viking, went, on, vacation.

7. Let’s read Dr. Suess’s alphabet book. Make your vacuum sound and motion when you hear /v/. “Vera Violet Vin is very very very awful on her violin.” Vera Violet Vinn is really bad at playing her instrument, but she still plays! Has there ever been anything you’ve been bad at that you kept trying?

8. Let’s find out if VET is vet or bet? V tells me to vacuum the floor, /v/, so this word is vvv-et, vet. You try some: VAN: van or tan? BEST: vest or best? HERB: verb or herb? VARY: vary or wary?

9. Pass out the worksheet. Students will practice printing and will identify which pictures start with the letter V.
